Mattress Lingo 101

Coil Count: Inside traditional mattresses, coils provide support. Some manufacturers will have you believe that more coils are better. At Ortho, coil count is vital, but certainly not the most important part of the equation. A bed can contain a billion coils, but still be lousy. We concentrate on coil gauge-the strength and durability of the coil-instead of coil count. Ortho uses the strongest coils available, exceeding the recommendations of Consumer Reports.

Coil Gauge: Traditional mattresses contain coils that provide support. While some manufacturers contend that the number of coils determines mattress quality, Ortho focuses on the coil gauge. Coil gauge refers to the strength of the coil itself. The stronger the coil, the stronger the support. Ortho mattresses use the strongest possible coil gauge, exceeding the recommendations of Consumer Reports.

Cross-motion: The disturbance you feel when your partner is tossing and turning or getting out of bed. There you are, deep in slumberland, when your partner's restlessness wakes you up. Many of Ortho's mattresses are built to minimize this troublesome phenomenon of cross-motion. Our own memory foam Ortho+Tempered® mattresses offer the best protection against cross-motion commotion.

Box Spring vs. Foundation: For additional support, a mattress often sits atop a box spring or foundation. A foundation is a basic platform made primarily from wood and corrugated board. A box spring features a steel grid for additional support, and sometimes includes extra steel springs.

Dr. Preferred: Ortho's proprietary mattresses are so good, they're doctor recommended. Paul Haberman, M.D. is so impressed with the quality and comfort of these beds that he endorses them for free. Ortho is the exclusive retailer of Dr. Preferred mattresses.

Eurotop: Same soft character as a pillowtop mattress. The additional padding is built into the mattress, not sewn on top of it.

Fireblocker: Historically, mattresses have been susceptible to fire. Now, California requires all mattresses to be open-flame resistant, a law known as Technical Bulletin 603. A mattress made using Fireblocker will not burst into flame, giving people more time to escape danger. All Ortho mattresses are built with Fireblocker.

Firm: In the spectrum of mattress firmness, a firm mattress is the firmest option. While a firm bed isn't necessarily hard, it does lack additional padding. If you're looking for a softer mattress, see Plush, Pillowtop, or Eurotop.

Factory Direct: Ortho not only sells a huge selection of bedding, it also manufactures many of its own mattresses. By avoiding the costs of middlemen, Ortho can offer better prices on its products, better inventory availability, and better customer service. Ortho mattresses are made fresh daily in Cerritos, CA.

Foam Encasement: Using a hard foam, additional reinforcement is added to the sidewalls and interior of the mattress. More luxurious models feature foam encasement, adding to the comfort and durability of the mattress.

Immediate Delivery: Not in a week; not in four days. Ortho offers immediately delivery of items that are in stock.

Memory Foam: A material invented by NASA to help astronauts through the rigors of space travel. Memory foam mattresses conform to your body's curves, providing unparalleled comfort and support. "It's like sleeping on a cloud," says a satisfied customer about our Ortho+Tempered® mattress.

Orthopedic: When a mattress offers enough support so the body can be properly aligned while sleeping. All Ortho mattresses are orthopedic.

Pillowtop: The softest mattress choice featuring additional padding sewn onto the top of the mattress.

Plush: The middle-ground of mattress firmness, plush offers more padding than firm, but less than a pillowtop of eurotop.

Posturized: When a mattress offers more support in areas where the torso lies, it is posturized. A posturized bed provides extra support where your body needs it most. All Ortho mattresses are posturized.

Technical Bulletin 603: (see Fireblocker, above) The California law that requires all mattresses to be open-flame resistant. Any mattress you buy should be tagged as compliant with Technical Bulletin 603. All Ortho mattresses use Fireblocker and adhere to the specifications of Technical Bulletin 603.

Visco-Elastic: (see memory foam) The more scientific description of the material NASA developed that helped astronauts cope with the pressure of space travel. Ortho+Tempered® mattresses, made with Visco-Elastic, conform to your body's curves, providing unparalleled comfort and support.
