Coils: Size Matters More Than the Count

Inside traditional mattresses, coils provide support. Some manufacturers will have you believe that more coils are better. At Ortho, coil count is vital, but certainly not the most important part of the equation. A bed can contain a billion coils, but still be lousy. We concentrate on coil gauge-the strength and durability of the coil-instead of coil count. Ortho uses the strongest coils available, exceeding the recommendations of Consumer Reports. Please be aware that the measurement of coil strength occurs on an inverse scale. The smaller the gauge, the stronger the coil. Ortho uses 12 ¾-13 gauge steel on its mattresses. Other manufacturers use 13 ½ or even 14 gauge, weaker and less durable steel. While these other bed makers crow about coil count, many of them increase the count at the expense of coil strength. At Ortho, we're committed to producing and selling mattresses that not only provide comfort, but also lasting value.
