With FIFA's World Cup bounding in just after the NBA Finals,
more folks are thinking sports; some are even getting more active and that
means sore muscles in need of a good mattress.
What type of mattress provides the most recuperative sleep? Many will
argue that a modern foam mattress can provide the support and yet cushion the
aching muscles. There are some mattresses that even tout their quality of
keeping one from getting dehydrated. One can only assume this would be from
perspiration while sleeping. Sleep cycles do lead to an increased metabolism to
help push the body into repair mode. Higher metabolism means higher core body
temperature and perspiration.
The British company, Mammoth, advertises having the Elite Athlete's
Mattress, a foam mattress with channels for air circulation and moisture
wicking fabric. The sports equipment manufacture, Nautilus has gotten into the
mix creating an air mattress with an additional foam layer. The air chambers
can be personalized to the sleepers and of course can be adjusted depending on
the bodies need on a given day. The Spring Air Company provides an Ironman
branded mattress designed with triathletes in mind who have three times the
ways of getting sore muscles.
Those companies represent the hard core athlete and even
they don't all use the latest mattress technology. Most people simply need to
remember that the point of their mattress is supporting their bodies. The 2010
Winter Olympic athletes slept on a mid-range Serta. Of course the Vancouver
Olympic committee needed almost 6000 of them for every Olympian and
Paralympian. That is a large order and needed the support of a large company
who could donate them. No one will doubt that Olympians are at the peak of
their game and require maximum support for recuperative sleep.
The key to an athletes mattress is good circulation of
blood. That blood flow will move the acids that cause the sore muscles out and
move the proteins in to repair them back in. The same supporting mattress that
helps an athlete will help the weekend warrior recover after a good bout of
yard work, or a long day of running around the office. A firm mattress can help
with some problems, but the pressure under other specific target areas can reap
havoc on the body. This is why mattresses need to have some flexibility.
Inner spring mattresses can provide the moderate rates of
flexibility and firmness. Mattress pads can be added or customized to form the
perfect sleep environment. Moderate temperatures and natural fibers can help
keep air flowing around the body as well. Proper air flow can help to regulate
the body temperature. If one gets to hot or cold, the sleep cycle is disturbed
as covers are discarded or pulled up. This disruption lead to feelings of restlessness
and fatigue.
Remember that a good night's sleep is necessary for all
those sports fans. Even if one never sees the pitch first hand. Even a
spectator needs to be rested to keep blowing the vuvuzela.
